Today’s Post – Portrait of a Duke!

A different kind of portrait today – a black and white study of the preserved British Railways Standard Class Pacific locomotive ‘Duke of Gloucester’ at Pickering station when visiting the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in April 2011 for a special steam festival. This particular engine, number 71000 was built as a prototype for a new class of express locomotives planned by BR in the late 1950s but the end of steam operation meant that the class never entered production, so the ‘Duke’ remained a one off unique type. After it was earmarked for scrap it was rescued and restored for preservation and now is back up to full operational condition. My visit to the NYMR took place on the day of the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton – hence the special wreath which adorns the loco at he front!
